Water taxi and Ellis Square

Sunday after church we decided to park on Hutchinson Island and take the water taxi over to the water front (Rivers Street) of Savannah.   We have done this before and find this is a great way to access the city without the stress of finding a parking space near where we want to walk.

The water taxi with the city in the background.

Once in Savannah, we found ourselves strolling in the squares, reading the historical plaques.   In Reynolds square was a statue of John Wesley, the founder of the Methodist Church.    We also saw historical monuments dedicated to Washington, and a general from the Revolutionary War.    Our adventure led us to Ellis Square and the City Market.
At Ellis Square was a statue of Johny Mercer who was legend in music, founding a record label.   We also found a nice art gallery with some local artists displaying paintings, ceramics and jewelry.
Sabrina loves picking "weedy" flowers.   She picked this one on Hutchinson Island on our way to catch the water taxi.   Here she is sitting in front of the beautiful snap dragon garden which also has roses blooming in the background.

Little Kitty

In the last couple of weeks, we have noted several cats appearing at our apartment complex.   We are not sure if they belong to someone who just moved in or if they are strays that were dumped off.   Regardless, this little black kitty daily checks in with us and Sabrina has to go outside to pet the kitty.   The little kitty does not like the adults in the family but practically tackles Sabrina.

We think Sabrina has been claimed with kitty markings.

A relaxed day

The day before Grandparents needed to fly out at o'dark thirty, we decided to have a relaxing day.   The morning started with coffee at a local bookstore.

Then we walked to the park and played on the climbing equipment.

With Grandpa and Singy!

Smile!

Giving Singing a swing!

Back at the apartment, feeding turtles bread.

Where are the turtles?

Here they are!

A perfect relaxing last day.   We all had a fun week and will miss having Grandparents around.   Every night after dinner we played Bridge and had quite a tradition going.    We are looking forward to our next visit!

Trolley Ride and Fort Pulaski

Sunday, we took the Old Savannah Trolley Tour which was absolutely wonderful!   Dennis, our tour guide, had much detailed history of Savannah.   Also, character actors got on the trolley and talked about different areas of the tour.   We were visited by the "ghost" of the Sorrel-Weed house.   She had been the second wife of an aristocrat.   Story goes that she ended her life at the house and visits it.   The house, like many in the South, is thought to be haunted.
On another stop, a pirate from the Pirate's House got on board and talked about how pirates really used the house to smuggle rum to Savannah and captured new pirates via the underground tunnels.   Captured individuals would be taken to the pirate ship after getting drunk on rum through the underground smuggling tunnel.   Then their choice presented:  become a pirate or fish food.   Sabrina loved this tour, too!   She is packing around her trolley ticket as a special trinket in her pocket.

After the trolley tour, we drove through Bonadventure Cemetery and then to Ft. Pulaski.   By this time the sun was no longer out clearly but the clouds had rolled in.   In fact, the wind was so strong we thought we might blow off the walls of the fort.   Hats were removed.   The tour guide took us to the top of the corner that was shot by Union Soldiers during the Civil War.   New streamline cannons projected farther and damaged the corner of Ft. Pulaski.   This once thought invincible fort fell in two days.  Above shows the damage that was not repaired.

The wall had been restored to how it looks

After recaptured, Ft. Pulaski became a prison until the end of the Civil War.   Five to Six men were required to share a bunk with only one blanket...during the last winter of the war.

A reptile celebration

After we picked up Randy from work, we all went down to the dock to feed Wilbur the duck and the turtle clan!

Lots of turtles in the water!

After dinner we had a super early birthday celebration with Sabrina and Grandma and Papa!

In the bag?

Teeth!

Watch out!   It bites!

An alligator puppet!   Sabrina named her Singy because she likes to sing.

Blowing out the candle on the sorbet.

A Puzzling Day

We decided we needed a day of rest in the apartment.   It was raining outside and was perfect day to do a large puzzle.  And we had Grandma Judy, one of the best puzzlers in the Pacific Northwest!

Finished!   A Seattle Art Museum puzzle which had totem like animals on it.

Park Day

On the way to Forsythe Park at the fountain.

Back at the apartment we went to feed Wilbur the duck and about fifteen turtles showed up and ate the bread crumbs we tossed in the water.

At the dock at the apartment.   Wilbur is underneath sleeping.

Savannah Children's Museum/ Train Museum

Thursday, Sabrina's class went on a field trip to the Savannah Children's Museum.    This was in an old train station which is being converted into a museum and all the exhibits are pretty much outside.

Most photos were taken quickly as Sabrina moved quickly from station to station at a full run.   I hardly could get a shot before she was off.   Her teacher remarked I needed a movie camera to really capture her in action.

Down the slide

Sabrina's "friend" who did almost everything with her.

The dress up station.  Note how the clothing us underneath to keep it dry.

These blocks had beads or glitter water inside to add color or interest.

These giant building blocks were a great hit!   The "friend" was putting cushions underneath her feet!

The upper level had many stations for different recreation.

Large tinker toys.

A huge xylophone.

Making music.

A rain stick.
