About thirty minutes drive from our apartment on Skidaway is the Georgia Aquarium. This is a university run aquarium and is a small facility but well done. In this photo a young loggerhead turtle has found how to unravel some mesh on the bottom of his tank. He was by far the most active loggerhead turtle we have seen but we were told that they are overall a very curious species.
One tank was full of invader species such as this lion fish. They have invaded areas and are competing with the native fish for food and habitat. Naturalists are trying to slow down or reverse the damage and catching these invaders.
Another angle of the loggerhead turtle who was swimming around and even playing with the orange coral in his tank.
While we were in the aquarium we saw the sea horses fed tiny shrimp. If we were quiet enough we could hear a sucking noise as they vacuumed in their meals.
Another feeding we watched was the octopus eating shrimp caught in the wild right outside the aquarium. This particular octopus was constantly in motion. We were told that he has excellent vision and has the ability to think at a high level.
These suckers on the octopus were small but on a larger octopus they would actually hurt if they latched on to you.
In the entry level of the aquarium, two young gators shared a tank. Sabrina pointed out to us that they had teeth.
A nice pier extended out into the water for viewing dolphins and manatees. (Manatees are only around in summer months.)
On old oak along the path was held together with metal bars. How wide is the trunk? At least one Randy and Sabrina arm widths!
