Last Sunday in Savannah--pizza and Ft. Pulaski

After church on Sunday we met with some of our friends at Mellow Mushroom for pizza.   With movies and superheros and the decorating theme, these two friends were having a blast!

Spiderman made an excellent ceiling decoration!

Playing while waiting for the food.

Lois Lane and Clark Kent posing with Iron Man!

Pizza coma started before we left.

After pizza we drove to Ft. Pulaski.   The temperature was close to 100 but there was a cool breeze.   These scary looking spiders were hanging in webs along the path to the dock.

The body shape and web reminded us of a black widow.

Along with the many spiders, the dragonflies were having a convention.   We were thankful to have them flying around eating mosquitoes and other bugs.

Food must have been abundant as most were chubby dragonflies.

Another creepy spider.

The coloring resembles the same colors found on poisonous snakes down here.   If this is not a poisonous spider, it is great at mimicking.

Finding cool spots, these pigeons were hanging out on the brick to relax.

On the portion of the wall overlooking the moat.

Second visit--Harris Neck Wildlife Refuge

On Father's Day we returned to Harris Neck Wildlife Refuge and mainly walked out to the rookery viewing point and the alligator area.   This bird, which we think is a loon variety sat along the banks taking in the sights.

The rookery from a distance.   The white birds include wood storks, herons and white egrets.   They live under the protection of the alligators by perching on branches on the island where raccoon cannot reach them.

Cattails were blooming!

Perfect perching spot for dragonflies.

A patrolling gator watching us.

Butterfly sighting!

A clear dragonfly and an orange one.

On the road leading to the entrance we spotted this mailbox taken over by vines.   Randy made it black and white to make it look older.

An old gas station.

World's Smallest Church

On the way to Harris Neck Wildlife Refuge we noted signs for the World Smallest Church.and so had to stop and see.

One room and a bell.

Inside, room for ten people and someone up front.   The church had stained glass windows.

Outside this little frog had to be caught and photographed.

Father's Day Weekend

Saturday of Father's Day weekend was our big day to celebrate and spend time together as a family.   Our morning started with a trip to the University of Georgia Aquarium on Skidaway Island.   Our mission was to see a manatee but they have not traveled this far north yet.   Most likely they will arrive in July or August.

Instead, we hiked a trail and watched for birds.   Our finds included the elusive pileated woodpecker and a blue jay.   However, sneaking up on wild birds with a five year old can be challenge when she wants to sing scouting songs.

Father and daughter lead the way through the woods looking for birds and examining different tree bark.

We were glad to find these green trail signs along the way to ensure we were on the correct path.

Looking for fiddler crabs.

Running up the dock.

Some old shacks on the property were former homes of the farmers or sharecroppers who used to live there.

This is what we were in search of ; manatees.  They graze close to shore among the salt marsh reeds.

After the aquarium we parked on Hutchinson Island and took the water taxi across the Savannah River where we walked across several squares to Reynolds Square, the location of the Pink House.   This old house once was converted into a bank but now is known for its food.   Most tourists are directed to eat at this restaurant as it is one of the oldest homes left in Savannah.

Strawberry and shrimp salad!   Yum!

Cheese sandwich and fries.

Shrimp gumbo for the father.

On Hutchinson Island these flowers were a great place to pose for a picture.

We stopped at Sabrina's good friend's house for a bbq.   The sky suddenly darkened and the rain, wind, thunder and lightning fell for hours.   During the storm our friend's house developed a leak in the downstairs of their house.   Water must have been blown underneath the shingles.   Randy and I now understand why shingles at Home Depot also can be purchased with a wind protection.   This area of the country has weather extremes with hot, muggy days followed by thunder and lightning evenings which cool the air.
