Weekend of local produce

As we suspected, we are living close to farms with yummy produce.   Finally, we were able to stop at a little produce/ flower shop that we drive by several times a week.   We were pleasantly surprised by not only the wonderful flowers and plants outside, but local Georgian produce inside.   This apparently is the start of "boiled peanut" season and we were offered a free sample which was lovely.   Also, inside were the largest carrots I have seen in my life:   think cucumber or squash and then you can get the relative idea of the size of these carrots.  We left with two yummy vine ripened tomatoes!   What wonderfully rich flavor.   Now I understand why many people hate buying tomatoes at the grocery store where they are picked green and then ripen in the store.

Two days later, we ventured to Ottawa Farms in Bloomingdale to pick strawberries.   We discovered that strawberries ripen in January-February and are a relatively early crop.   Again these strawberries were spectacular and pure red inside with a sweetness from the sun!   These won't last long in the fridge as the strawberry monster in the house will eat them up quickly!

Can't wait to sample blueberries and peaches which come up soon!
