Fort McAllister

Sunday, after church we spent Randy's only day off for the week exploring Fort McAllister.   We discovered this fort just thirty minutes down the road.   It was the last fort Sherman took during the Civil War before he took over Savannah.   The actual battle took fifteen minutes as the Union invaded from the land side of the fort and there was not much to protect it.   Outside the museum were the largest Elephant Ear plants we have seen.   Sabrina is modeling why they are named Elephant Ears.

The fort had park rangers dressed in costume but this soldier had taken off his hand which was then modeled by Sabrina near the map tables.

Outside was the tool shed.

The actual fort was literally constructed with wood and dirt.   It was buried beneath the mounds which meant it was easy to repair when struck from the cannons from ships.

A view from the fort to the Ogeechee River which is built to protect.   The Ogeechee River gave a southern access to Savannah.   It literally wound back and forth like a large snake.   Randy recalls reading somewhere that Ogeechee is an Native American term for river with long shores.

From a viewing point along the river just outside the fort.

These trees have all grown up since the Civil War.   During the battle, the area where the trees are, except for the land side which was dense shrub and trees, was plain dirt.
